ENCÓRE GOES JIGGIN’!

 1,2,3,4,5,6,7…1,2,3 and 1,2,3…!  This is what some members of Encóre Contemporary Choir have been hearing in their sleep over the past few weeks as they prepare for the choir’s latest fund-raising venture!

A ‘Strictly Come Jiggin’’ event is being held in the Delacroix on Saturday 20th July to raise funds for the choir’s Millennium Forum concert in September.  And both nights are shaping up to be nights to remember.

Around 12 choir members – male and female – most of whom have never done Irish dancing in their lives before! – signed up for the event.  They will compete against each other to win the coveted ‘Strictly Come Jiggin’ title during a night that will also see a performance from Encóre, described as ‘the North West’s premier contemporary choir’, and a professional dance display.

Their long-suffering dance teacher Giovanna McKinney from the McKinney Academy of Irish Dance, who has kindly given her services free to the choir, is full of praise for her pupils.

“What they lack in experience, they certainly make up for in enthusiasm, dedication – and blisters!”, she said.  “They are all working away on their own and besides choir practice, are coming to dance practice as often as they can.”

Emmet Doherty, Encóre’s Musical Director, is also full of praise for the ‘dancers’.   “They joined the choir to sing, not dance, and it’s great that they’ve willingly – well with a little persuasion from fellow members! – put themselves out there”, said Emmet.  “I think it’s a measure of the passion we all feel for Encóre that members are so eager to always go the extra mile in the interests of the choir.”

“We want to put on a fabulous show on 8th September in the Forum, part of the proceeds of which will go to the charity, Action on Hearing Loss.   And with the help of the money raised from this event, there is no doubt that it will be all that, and more”, he added.
